Amazon Ads for Traditionally Published Authors: Good or Bad?

3 / 25 / 223 / 26 / 22

Did you know that in October of 2021 Amazon paid nearly 40 million dollars in royalties? One single month, and mostly to self-published authors! Amazon’s share of eBook sales is a whopping 84%, followed by Kobo at 13%, and Barnes & Noble plummeting to 2.1%. (Source:  Hosting Tribunal https://hostingtribunal.com/blog/ebooks-stats/#gref)

This reminds us how important Amazon’s platform remains, whether you’re wide or not, and the importance of advertising to reach those readers.

With indie authors upping their advertising game and benefiting from it, it’ll be interesting to see how traditionally published authors regain control of their advertising and step up on Amazon in a big way.

There’s been a lot of debate since Amazon announced that traditionally published titles can now be claimed and advertised from the author’s dashboard. If you haven’t heard the news, you can learn more about it here.

Back to the debate, though: Is this is a good or a bad thing? Let’s break it down.

Starting with the cons, we must agree that an already competitive market is about to be even more so. This could mean it’s going to cost more to be visible with your advertising, and that you could be competing against ads your publisher is running—yikes!

So more competition, increased costs, and less profit earned back on trad titles. Then what are the benefits, if any?

Amazon ads are an amplifier. They amplify sales on books that are already selling well. They reward relevancy with visibility and can open up all sorts of options for sales. Traditionally published authors don’t have the freedom and control over their publishing and marketing plans that indie authors have. It’s exceptionally beneficial for authors to be able to control as many assets as possible, advertising being one of them.

Here are the reasons why trad authors would want to advertise their books using Amazon ads:

  1. If their books are selling well already, then turning on their own advertising campaigns is going to have a positive impact on sales and increase profits. There’s a good chance the ads alone would never have a positive return on investment on their own, but overall sales and profits could increase as a result and therefore be worth it. After all, ads get readers to buy a single title. The author gets readers to read the next book and the next.
  • If they have a new release coming up, then advertising is going to help the author be visible and relevant during the new release period.
  • Advertising has many goals and benefits outside of simply selling books. They help an author collect data to learn who their target audiences are, what keywords are relevant for them, and more. Knowing that data will help improve and strengthen their marketing efforts going forward.

Despite being traditionally published and able to run Amazon ads, there are a few reasons why we would suggest you hold off:

  1. If your publisher refuses to run ads on your behalf, and the books aren’t selling well, then you might want to create a small auto ad… but don’t waste resources on a full-blown advertising campaign that Amazon won’t get off the ground because it doesn’t think the books will sell well.
  • If your publisher spends thousands of dollars a month on Amazon ads for you–first, that’s awesome! Second, you don’t really need to spend your money if they are doing such a stellar job. You might consider running a few auto ads to collect data for your other marketing pursuits, but don’t worry about doing too much there. Let them handle it.
  • If you have one book out, or even two, it might not make sense to advertise—yet. Build your backlist up. Remember, you won’t have profitable ads from the ads alone. The profit comes from readers reading through your series, and if you don’t have other books for readers to read through, you’re losing money and opportunity. Save your ad dollars for when you have the books to help you turn a profit from advertising. Set yourself up for success!

Amazon ads are best suited for long-term usage. They are slow to gain momentum but can carry an author far over time. Use them for series, or for all your books when you have a backlist built. Facebook ads are better for short-term, quick burst usage. Use these to gain sales quickly, during temporary sales, or even new releases.

Good luck in your advertising ventures! If you need a helping hand, feel free to reach out to our team for a free advertising consult.

Join The Aurora Family

6 / 8 / 206 / 8 / 20

Ready to hire an author assistant? Learn why you should choose Aurora Publicity.

First let’s address what we’re not, because that’s just as important as what we are. We are not a publisher or a traditional PR company.

What we are is a close community of author assistants who are dedicated, driven, and thoroughly engrossed in the publishing industry. We round out our teams with super specialized assistants who rock those harder tasks like Amazon ads, Facebook ads, design, branding, publishing, PR, formatting, editing, and strategy. But we do and offer so much more.

We help our authors at every stage of their publishing journey, and those overall efforts are under the marketing and publicity umbrella. We help our authors with the public visibility and awareness of their brand and their books, and that is why “publicity” is in our name. The butterfly is transformative and symbolizes change. Our book butterflies portray our goal to guide our authors on their journey as we make actionable plans to transform their careers.

What makes us different? A lot of things, but most importantly, the relationships we have with our authors and other industry-leaders. Our authors aren’t only clients to us; they’re friends, and they tend to stick with us for many, many years. Although we may be spread out all over the world, when we come together, it’s a celebration of years of hard work, laughter, bad reviews, amazing interviews, and so much more. We have close-knit relationships with other industry leaders who we call upon to help our authors as well.

When you work with Aurora, you’ve joined our family. We’re in your corner for the good, the bad, and the absolutely crazy (you know what we’re talking about in this industry). While the steps we take may vary based on if we’re working with a new, mid-list, or career-established author, our goal is always the same: to help our authors define their success and then to help them get there.

We work with all different kinds of authors from debut to New York Times Bestselling, and everything in between. From traditionally published to indie, and every genre imaginable. You can look over our client list. While we got our start in romance, and word-of-mouth sort of exploded from there, we’ve really opened up to all genres.

So how do you know Aurora is right for you? We’re going to be really honest here. If you’re looking for an author assistant to take on some simple tasks, then you’re going to find a dozen who are cheaper than we are. If you want quick sales, then we’re not right for you either. Our focus is on long-term growth and momentum and that takes time and effort. No short-cuts.

Growth—->Engagement—->Sales

That’s our motto, and our method behind the things that we do and focus on. It might not be right for you, and that’s okay.

So why would you want to work with us?

You will want to work with Aurora if you’re looking for an author assistant to take on some simple tasks while also wanting to utilize a team of specialists for more. You’re going to want to work with Aurora to strategize a plan for your success, and work with our team on helping you to get there. If you’re tired of working with a dozen assistants, you’ll enjoy our umbrella approach to simplify and energize your marketing and promotional plans.

We work with authors who want to invest in their author careers.

We work with authors who are busy writing and want someone they trust, and more importantly, someone they mesh with and like to look after everything else that makes writing a business.

We work with authors who don’t know where to start. We work with ones who do know how to start.

It is an investment, and it is a business. Not every author can afford the time or money to take that plunge, but if you are ready, then we encourage you to sign up for a free 30-minute marketing consult with us. Use this time to ask us questions, pick our book marketing brains, and determine if we’re the right family for you. You can sign up here.

We encourage you to dream. What do you want your success to look like? Let us help you get there.

Holy cannonballz! ARR ye excited yet? And the good thing is my book is the last of the series. Yes, you can get all ten books right now and the first one is absolutely FREE on Amazon! (See below for details on how to get your copy.)

So without any further ado, I give you my hero, Wolverine, and his Storm/Rogue-inspired heroine!

Inside the Book:

Wolfgang, one of Lord Wellington’s craftiest spies, is a fighter, an indulgent loner who is cunning and bold enough to go where others do not dare. He hates distractions and complications, especially those involving the fairer sex, and his instincts have always fueled him and kept him on course, mission after mission. That is, until his talents steer him toward a destiny he didn’t know he had and a search for the brother he barely remembers. And when he comes into contact with a brave young woman disguised as a boy, the urge he feels to protect her might just lead him on the biggest adventure of all.

Selina’s wedding day did not go as planned. Instead, she was kidnapped by pirates and ransomed for an exorbitant sum. Her diabolical captors didn’t hold up their end of the bargain, however, and kept her imprisoned even after their demands were met. More clever than her kidnappers expected, she managed to escape and disguised herself as a boy. Forced to lie, cheat, and steal in order to stay alive, she loses hope of ever returning to the man she intended to marry. Desperate, she agrees to become a handsome and compassionate sea captain’s cabin boy to gain passage back to Cornwall, but the captain endangers the one thing she cannot afford to lose—her heart.

The Mercenary Pirate Excerpt

Selina knocked the captain’s boot with her foot. Anyone would be cork-brained to agree to Robillard’s request. While the invitation appeared innocent on the surface, she’d witnessed Robillard’s trickery before. She knew what he was capable of.

Panic filled her, and her lungs seized, cutting off her breath. She wanted to run, knowing full well that within a matter of moments she’d be caught and thrown back in chains. And then her one and only shot at escape would be dead on the floor because of her.

She lowered her head so no one would see her mouth. “No,” she whispered. “Don’t listen to him.”

He said nothing but stared down Robillard with a tenacity that brokered on madness. “My crew is awaiting my return.”

“Oui,” Robillard said. He studied the two of them for several nerve-racking moments, then snapped his fingers. “And when you do not arrive, I am sure your men will pay handsomely for your safe return. Much more than fifty boxes of figuerados. Am I right, Capitaine?”

Dear Lord, sometimes she hated being right. Robillard had no intention of letting either of them leave. But whatever the captain chose to do, no matter what it entailed, she meant to follow. She could not help Owen chained to a wall.

Robillard raised his arms. “Saisissez-les!” Seize them!

Men withdrew their weapons, advancing on them from three sides. The captain backed them up to the bar, a paneled wall with windows behind them. Selina swallowed her fear. The enormity of the situation struck her. Acting as her protector, the captain pushed her behind the counter.

“What are you doing?” she asked, unable to mask the quiver in her voice. Did he intend fight the corsairs alone?

She needn’t have worried. The captain anchored his feet, threw out his arms, flicked something on his wrist guards, and bowed forward. Blades sprung from within his leather bracings, slicing the air with timely shrieks.

Several men approached, their mouths set at cocky angles. Undeterred, the captain roared like a berserker, twirling in a circle and slashing his armed fists at anyone who charged him. Several crazed but determined men decided to test his mettle and leaped forward. But the captain maneuvered his body with a flexibility she’d never witnessed before. He wielded his blades upward and down like an expert, knowing exactly which angle would inflict injury on his attackers. Astounding!

Selina’s respect for the captain grew with each feint and parry. Wisely, he used his coattails to fend off blows to his middle. Then, with unmatched lethal skill, part professional fencer and part savateur, he launched at his enemy, sweeping his leg around, kicking with the flat of his foot. His boot found its mark, causing damage to one of the two most vulnerable places on a man—the stomach. The force instantly felled his opponent.

By the saints, who was this captain of the Sea Wolf? His prowess was unmatched. He was outnumbered and yet managed to defy natural law. Part of her longed to observe his skill as she’d done with Owen, but logic argued against it. Their lives were at risk. She needed to do something to help the captain narrow the odds. But what? She had no weapons.

Wellington’s spies, kidnapped bride, betrayal, greed, espionage, superheroes reimagined, corsairs, a heroine disguised as a cabin boy, and plenty of action and adventure make this last book, The Mercenary Pirate, The Heart of a Hero Series #10, one epic thrilling ride!

Genre: Regency Romance

Set against the backdrop of the War of 1812,
a brand-new tale of courage, healing and love from
NY Times and USA Today bestselling author DANELLE HARMON…

Inside the Book:

HERO OF THE SEA:
His life devastated by tragedy, privateer Captain Kieran Merrick, youngest son of a famed New England maritime family, sets sail for his childhood home to confront bittersweet memories. When he encounters a merchant ship adrift in the Caribbean, he discovers something he never expects … a red-haired, pistol-wielding virago hiding in its cabin.

But she’s fleeing scandal, and now savage pirates who seized her family’s merchant ship have something both she and her handsome rescuer want. Through their unexpected attraction, can these two wounded souls overcome danger, deceit and the cold wrath of a brutal pirate to discover a love that could heal them both?

From the author of the internationally acclaimed and mega-bestselling series The De Montfortes!

Heir to the Sea Excerpt

Kieran shut the door behind them.

“Well,” he said, taking off his black top hat and placing it on a chair. He ran a hand through his hair, ruffling it and restoring it to the carelessly tousled look she loved so much. “If we were any other couple, I’d ply you with drink to dispel any nervousness, have a shot or two myself, and we’d get down to the business of consummating our union.”

“But we’re not any other couple.”

“No, we’re not.” He sat down on the bed and began to pull off a shoe.

She watched him. “But we still have to get to the consummation part.”

“Indeed.”

The hell with patience. “And I’d like to begin it by getting you as naked as I saw you last week, but then I’d have to contend with what I suspect would be your complete and utter shock.”

He paused in removing his shoe, cocked his head ever so slightly, and looked at her, one corner of his mouth lifting almost imperceptibly. It was subtle, but she had come to recognize that look. It was his look of information-gathering, of mulling that information over in his mind, of coming to conclusions that were, almost always, uncannily correct. There was no hiding from that look, no lying to that look. And, as if he knew the direction of her thoughts—and surely he did—the slight lift in his mouth became a teasing, amused little smile, and he raised one dark and questioning brow.

“Do you know, Rosalie,” he said, removing the other shoe, “I do believe I would enjoy being completely and utterly shocked.”

“Would you?”

He pushed aside the cast-off shoes with one foot and again, looked up at her. The last rays of the setting sun caught the profile of his face, gleamed in his dark, carelessly curling hair, and struck gold off the buttons of his open tailcoat. And then his mouth began to twitch with suppressed humor.

“What?” she asked, grinning.

“This beautiful woman is my bride, but her boldness she thinks I cannot abide—”

“No, no poetry—”

“When truth be told I’d have her no other way, the most beautiful girl on the Chesapeake Bay.”

Rosalie laughed, shook her head, and put her hands on her hips. “Kieran Merrick, I hope to God you’re a better lover than you are a poet.”

“Why don’t you come over here and find out?”

New Release: The Marooner by Barbara Devlin

8 / 29 / 179 / 7 / 17

Today we celebrate the release of
The Marooner (Pirates of the Coast Book 3)
by USA Today and Amazon All-Star best-selling author Barbara Devlin!
Publication date: August 29, 2017
Genre: Historical Romance

Barbara Devlin offers history, romance, and mystery all wrapped up in an engrossing story that is filled with witty repartee and ribald scenes that border on debauchery. ~IndieReader

Inside the Book:

A GENTLY BRED VIRGIN
Lady Sophia Grace Radcliff, the epitome of a genteel Englishwoman, has no idea what awaits her, when she is summoned to her father’s study to meet her prospective husband. Given the miserable state of the family finances, she understands she will be sold to the highest bidder, to save the earldom from a humiliating declaration of insolvency, and it is a sacrifice she is prepared to accept. But the impeccably tailored garb and clean-shaven face do nothing to conceal the menacing demeanor of her intended. How will she survive a match to a man she fears?

A COLD-HEARTED PIRATE
Leland Stryker, known throughout the pirate ranks as The Marooner, for his practice of abandoning his victims on deserted islands, is a ruthless buccaneer who reluctantly signs a pact with the English, in exchange for a full pardon for past crimes. But the Crown extends no protection to the fairer sex, and it is in the sensual realm that Leland feeds his basic instincts. After he successfully negotiates the purchase of a highborn bride, he proceeds to well and truly debauch her. But something happens on the journey to America, as his wife assumes her position without complaint, and soon Leland realizes he faces his most lethal opponent. Who will win the battle of the hearts?

The Marooner Excerpt

Derbyshire, England
September, 1818

Somewhere in the dim light of the chandeliers, his future wife mingled with so-called polite society, but he would argue the perfumed peacocks, despite their refined manners, were every bit as cutthroat as the worst of his associates, especially the marriage-minded mamas, as they trotted their daughters before a man they believed was a well-heeled, wealthy American merchant.

In truth, he was but a wolf in gentleman’s clothing, with his face clean-shaven and his black hair trimmed and tied in a leather thong, that he might appear civilized. Of course, the as-yet unknown darling did not know she was marked as the bride for ruthless former pirate Leland Stryker, as he surveyed the various targets, bedecked in their finery, and how the beast was hungry. What would he choose from so many tempting offerings? Blonde, brunette, ebony, or redhead? Curvy or slender? Blue, green, hazel, or brown eyes? Tall or short? Meek and mild or saucy and fiery of temperament?

In the end, his body would decide.

Devlin’s prose and descriptions enchant right from the opening scene. ~RT Book Reviews

This heart-fluttering, nerve-wracking, swoon-worthy romance is one for the ages! ~InD’tale Magazine

About Barbara:

USA Today bestselling, Amazon All-Star author Barbara Devlin was born a storyteller, but it was a weeklong vacation to Bethany Beach, DE that forever changed her life. The little house her parents rented had a collection of books by Kathleen Woodiwiss, which exposed Barbara to the world of romance, and Shanna remains a personal favorite. Barbara writes heartfelt historical romances that feature not so perfect heroes who may know how to seduce a woman but know nothing of marriage. And she prefers feisty but smart heroines who sometimes save the hero, before they find their happily ever after. Barbara is a disabled-in-the-line-of-duty retired police officer, and she earned an MA in English and continued a course of study for a Doctorate in Literature and Rhetoric. She happily considered herself an exceedingly eccentric English professor, until success in Indie publishing lured her into writing, full-time, featuring her fictional knighthood, the Brethren of the Coast.

Instead, Pierce was pulled from the water by the Robin Hood of Cornwall, a pirate known only as the Black Regent. In gratitude, Pierce accepts the Regent’s offer to take over the man’s role, allowing his name to be added to the list of the dead and vowing to protect the beautiful innkeeper who saved his sister Chloe’s life. Unfortunately, Oriana is also Carnage’s next of kin, and the smuggler has sworn vengeance against her and Chloe.

While there is no cause dearer to Pierce’s heart than stopping Carnage, the task won’t be easy. Strategic allegiances have replenished his enemy’s power at sea, and he’s moving ever closer to enacting his revenge. Now Pierce must find a way to defeat Carnage, all while fighting his desire for the resilient woman who fiercely defends her roost.

The Pirate’s Duty Excerpt

He threaded his fingers through her unbound hair, then grabbed a handful, gently hauling her forward and slowly molding her to him so their lips would soon touch. Her breath hitched and she shivered slightly, but still he extended the wait. Prolonging the meeting of their flesh was sheer agony, but he didn’t want her to flit away like a frightened butterfly. He wanted her to trust him, to soothe her doubts and fears, to show her at least one man promised safety in his arms.

“I will never harm you,” he said. She was a whispered breath away now, so temptingly close that he knew kissing her would damn him for eternity. “You have my word.”

She placed a finger over his lips, focusing on them before meeting his eyes. “Don’t speak. I’ve already borne a lifetime of lies.”

Guilt stabbed him afresh, robbing his breath.

She smiled brazenly, pulling him toward her waiting mouth, offering a temptation he couldn’t resist. Drugged by her nearness, Walsingham drank her in, relishing the feel of her in his arms, the taste of her on his mouth.

But she was innocent. Not in the ways of her family’s smuggling business, or where her brother was concerned, but in matters of the flesh certainly. It was evident in her shy exploration of his mouth.

A low growl escaped him as he broke away from her in frustration. It was his duty to honor this woman, protect her at all costs, even if it meant descending the cliff this very night and taking a dip in the cold, crashing surf below. Even if it meant sacrificing every lie, every shameful deception he’d enlisted so that she would be free of her brother.

“Forgive me. I can’t do this.” He took her by the hand and led her across the kitchen.

“Where are ye takin’ me?” she asked, stumbling to catch up with his lengthy strides.

“Upstairs. To your room.”

She stopped cold. “No. I want . . . I need to . . .”

“Not in the middle of the kitchen where anyone could walk in on us.” He yanked on her arm, but she wouldn’t budge. Undeterred, he grabbed her and threw her over his shoulder.

“Put me down,” she snapped.

“Shh. Unless you want to wake everyone.” He made his way up the stairs, calmed by the fact that she’d stopped arguing with him. At the top of the staircase, he carried her to her bedchamber, opened the door, and stepped inside.

New Release: ShadowWolfe by Kathryn Le Veque

7 / 27 / 178 / 7 / 17

Today we celebrate the release of ShadowWolfe: Sons of de Wolfe (de Wolfe Pack Book 4)
by USA Today and Amazon All-Star best-selling author Kathryn Le Veque!
Publication date: July 27th, 2017
Genre: Medieval Romance

Inside the Book:

1272 A.D. – Recovering from a great tragedy that had befallen his family, Scott de Wolfe, eldest son of William de Wolfe and Jordan Scott, has become a career knight with no feeling, no compassion. As a premier knight for Henry III, Scott has been tasked with the management of the massive fortress of Castle Canaan after the death of the castle’s commander. Although it seems like a simple enough task, little does Scott know that the moment he enters this fortress is the moment his life will change… forever.

Lady Avrielle du Rennic is reeling over the death of her husband and she blames de Wolfe for it. Fed by grief, she lashes out at the big knight who has come to take her husband’s place and, eventually, take the fortress. Scott has no patience for the woman in mourning but he stops short of punishing her because she is the mother to three small children. When Scott happens to save one of her children from certain doom, a path of healing and understanding begin for them both but when the king intervenes to take Avrielle and her children away, Scott must fight for what has become precious to him. He cannot stand to lose another family.

A deep and passionate love is born from the ashes of grief in this stunning Medieval Romance, part of the de Wolfe Pack series.

ShadowWolfe Excerpt

Scott was standing over her, looking down at her head, the infant against her breast, and feeling his heart swell in ways he could hardly comprehend. He came around to the front of her, taking a knee and bringing himself to her eye level. The expression on his face was nothing short of raw as he gazed into her eyes.

“Swear it to me,” he breathed.

She nodded fervently. “I swear it.”

It was all Scott needed to hear. Those three words cemented something into his heart and soul that he would never again lose, cementing faith that he thought he’d lost. Faith that there would be happiness again in his life and faith that there was hope for the future. He thought he’d lost those feelings long ago, but Avrielle had somehow managed to bring them back. The realization nearly overwhelmed him.

As the babe nursed at her breast, Scott brought his hands up, cupping Avrielle’s sweet face. All he did was stare at her for a moment, feeling her soft flesh beneath his hands, hardly believing this moment was upon him. It didn’t seem real. Yet, Avrielle was very real in his hands, her skin warm and delicate in his palms, and those lips he’d admired from afar were calling to him.

This time, he answered the call.

His mouth slanted over hers, warm and gentle, as her scent filled his nostrils, intoxicating him. It was a defining moment for him because it spoke of untold promises, unspoken words, and a future he thought he’d lost. He could taste her sweetness upon his lips and he feasted on her, listening to her soft gasps of pleasure as he suckled her lips.

His kisses grew bolder, more demanding, but he knew this wasn’t the place for such things. This was only the beginning of what was to come and his mouth left hers, kissing her cheeks, her nose, her eyes, before moving down her neck. Gentle kisses rained over that beautiful neck and onto the swell of her beautiful breasts, feeling the soft and gentle skin against his lips.

Lady Calinda Barclave has worked alongside her grandfather, Admiral Barclave, to run Her Majesty’s Crown Shipping Company for four years. When she’s unable to discover who is behind the company’s shortage in profits, she turns to the dashing Captain Remington for help. But when she discovers his betrayal, she realizes she’s lost the shipping company she loves. And her heart along with it.

Here’s a special preview…

“I’ve been sent by Her Majesty. She has an assignment she’d like you to undertake.”

Ford couldn’t stop the smile that lifted the corners of his mouth. “You’ll excuse me if I take my time in considering Her Majesty’s offer. The last assignment I accepted in her name nearly got me killed.”

Major Thrush’s booming laughed echoed in the closed carriage. “I assure you that this assignment won’t take you behind enemy lines. Nor will it contain any of the elements of danger you confronted during the war. All this requires is that you play the part of the scoundrel Her Majesty is convinced you are.”

Ford Winced.

“Are you sure Her Majesty doesn’t have me confused with one of my mates? There were four of us, after all.”

The major laughed again. “Yes, but you proved the most scandalous of them. Especially where the ladies are concerned.”

“I’m not sure if that is a compliment or—”

“It means you were damnably good at what you did, which is why Her Majesty chose you for this mission.”
